Tourist season starts earlier this year
Earlier, the tourist season will start this year. Because of the Orthodox Easter in the first week of April and the Catholic Easter that is at the end of March, hotels are preparing to welcome the first tourists for the season in almost a month from today. Hoteliers are looking forward to complete their renovations in order to be ready to open their doors in time. All operators are optimistic about the continuous increase in arrivals for 2018, and expect to break the 3.6 million tourists' barrier last year.
Tour operators estimate that the rise in the tourist flow will be around 5% -10% if the increase in air seats and the creation of new hotels are calculated. The Chairman of the Cyprus Travel Agents, Vasilis Stamataris, said that there would be a slight increase in the tourist flow, noting that this year the number of reservations is increased compared to last year. As he mentioned; "The trend will be rising for 2018, but at a slower pace than last year's record. The month of January is a month in which the contracts are being recalculated and signed and, as they show the data due to the availability of flights and new hotels, there will be an increase in tourist traffic of 5% -10%. "
Cyprus Hotels Association's General Manager, Zacharias Ioannidis, said that the number of hotels that will operate from March will be much higher than last year to meet the increased demand that will be due to the Catholic Easter tourists. "Throughout March they chose to open many hotels, with the majority preparing to accept tourists around the end of the month."
It is worth mentioning that 2017 was a year that broke all the records of Cypriot tourism. Tourism arrivals last year increased by 14.6%, while in 2016 it exceeded over half a million tourist arrivals last year, marking an increase of about 20%. Based on the survey of travelers from the Statistical Office of Cyprus, tourists from the United Kingdom grew by 8.3% and were the country with the most arrivals, while Russia recorded an increase of 5.5%. A major increase was recorded in 2017 in tourist arrivals from Israel, which is 76.1%. Finally, a significant increase was also recorded by Germany at 52.2%.
